Just a few years after Netflix announced its move into gaming, the streaming company appears to be pulling back slightly as it quietly shuts down its triple-A gaming studio.
Known internally as ‘Team Blue,’ the gaming studio was only revealed in October of 2022.
It included industry veterans including Chacko Sonny, Joseph Staten, and Rafael Grassetti but it was on Tuesday (October 22) when GameFile reported it had been shut down.
The report states: “As of October 2024, however, Netflix has shut down Team Blue and all three of those big hires are no longer at the company, a company rep confirmed to GameFile.”
The studio is said to be one of a handful of internal studios Netflix has assembled over the last few years.
It was only a month ago when Joseph Staten, the Creative Director at Netflix Games, posted a job advert on LinkedIn for a Senior Technical Narrative Designer.
In the post, he said: “We’ve got big narrative ambitions on team “Blue” at Netflix Games and we need great people to help us achieve them. If you’re passionate about designing systems that enable amazing stories to come to life, we’d love to hear from you!”
Netflix suddenly closes gaming studio ‘Team Blue’
The streaming service has had a steady release of games on its platform since it first announced it would be heading in that direction in 2021.
It was only in July of 2024 when it was made public that the company has over 80 games in development and plans to release a new game every month into Netflix Stories, their games and interactive fiction hub.
A reason for the closure isn’t yet known, but the GameFile journalist Stephen Totilo shared his scoop on X before adding: “Story has more context. Definitely a sign of new leaders pulling back from one big bet, but Netflix still has a bunch more studios and execs seem hyped on growth targets and show tie-in games.”

While Netflix hasn’t shared the news themselves, they confirmed with PC Gamer that the Game File report is accurate but declined to comment further.
