Monster Hunter Wilds open beta – how to play it on PC, Xbox and PlayStation

Monster Hunter Wilds is generating a lot of excitement considering it is not slated for a full release until the end of February 2025.

The Monster Hunter games have always been incredibly popular so the opportunity to jump on board a beta test for the game months ahead of launch was always one that was going to send players into a frenzy.

Indeed, at the time of writing the beta for Monster Hunter Wilds has just gone live and is already one of Steam’s top trending games according to SteamDB. But how do you join in the fun, do you have to have completed a pesky pre-order or can you just, you know, unthinkably, have a look at the game without making a triple AAA commitment in price? Let’s find out.

How to play the Monster Hunter Wilds beta

The good news right at the start is that you can join the beta for free and it is also easy to do so. It won’t cost you a $70 pre-purchase, you don’t need to sign your life away on countless registration forms, you can just play. Weird eh?

If you are on a PC simply head to Steam and find Monster Hunter Wilds. Beneath all the pre-purchase options you will see a box asking if you want to request access to the Playtest. It kind of suggests there is a waiting list but we just clicked the box and were given instant access. Whether this changes as more and more players join in and spaces become more limited is unclear.

Monster Hunter Wilds download options

Anyway, after doing that you can simply install and play the beta test until time runs out, and you can see when that is below.

For PlayStation and Xbox, simply find the game in the appropriate store and download the Playtest client from there.

What is in the Monster Hunter Wilds beta?

The beta gives you complete character customization and anything you do now can be transferred over to the final game should you choose to purchase it.

Mission wise you get the tutorial hunt and a multiplayer hunt – in short, enough to keep you going for the next couple of days until the beta ends.

When does the Monster Hunter Wilds beta finish

The slightly bad news is that it is not going to run for a very long time, so to max out your time in the game you want to get in quickly. The Monster Hunter Wilds beta is slated to run between October 31st and November 3rd, so at least you get the weekend to give it a proper go.

How big is the Monster Hunter Wilds beta download?

You are looking at needing just under 25GB of storage space free on your device in order to install and play the Monster Hunter Wilds beta.
