As brands prepare to close in on the end of the year, Meta has officially launched its last software update for 2024 for the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S which will see the addition of hand-tracking.
With the v72 software update, ‘Hand Tracking 2.3’ has been released with the team stating they’ve “done a lot of work this year to make the hand-tracking experience more seamless.”
The upgrade will see an enhancement in stability, accuracy, and ease of use across the board, with additional improvements in Horizon OS taking place over the next few weeks.
This will include making the hand cursor more stable and responsive when navigating the universal menu, stabilizing the cursor while pinching, improving the pinch-and-drag interaction,s and making it easier to use hands in confined spaces.
A new hand ray visualization will be added too which aims to help with locating and targeting the cursor.
“These v72 updates are the most recent (and substantial) advances in hand tracking, but it’s an area we’ve focused on a lot this year,” Meta explains in the announcement.
“For instance, you might have noticed a significant reduction in “hand stealing” —basically, Quest is now better at focusing on your hands instead of your friends’ hands, your feet, or even your cat.”

Another major change in the Meta Quest 3 software update is the partnership with Microsoft to turn the Meta Quest 3 and 3S into an extension of the Windows 11 PC.
Once the initial setup has been completed, users can then pair the device with their Windows 11 PC quickly and easily.
Another feature is the new Media Gallery app for Horizon OS which will help to manage screenshots, video captures, and images.
The v72 software update began rolling out on Monday (December 9) but this will be gradual with certain features taking a little longer than others.
