Keeping Data Centers Cool and Costs Down Through Consolidation

Keeping the Web alive and well isn’t easy work. In fact, it requires a lot of computing power – and that requires a lot of power that goes to not only to running data centers, but cooling them as well. You can’t avoid those costs entirely, but you can reduce them. One way is to consolidate workloads using virtualization.

According to Gartner, an x86 server running an operating system and workload “bare metal” is only using about 5% to 10% of its capacity in any 24-hour period. Want to do better? Intel and VMware have suggestions on keeping costs down in the white paper, “Improving Energy Efciency with Intel Xeon Processor-based Servers and VMware Virtualization Infrastructure.”
