Apple Sends iPad Event Invitations For October 16

The October 16 date for what’s expected to be Apple’s unveiling of new iPads has gone from expected to official: CNET reports that Apple just invited journalists to its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters next week, presumably to see CEO Tim Cook and his execs wax poetic about the new version of its tablet.

Following the company’s iPhone and Apple Watch event last month, iPads and likely Macs will finally take the spotlight. We expect the team will finally lavish some attention on Yosemite, the latest version of the OS X desktop operating system. (Alleged pictures of the iPad Air 2 have also leaked online.)

The company took the wraps off its newest, biggest iPhones to date and its brand-new smartwatch on the Flint Center stage, where departed co-founder Steve Jobs introduced the Macintosh 30 years ago. This time around, the team will stay on its home turf, sticking to the Town Hall auditorium at its Infinite Loop Campus, when it shows off its tablet. While using a smaller venue at its own grounds may or may not mean anything, it does give hypercritical pundits the fodder to overanalyze.

Also available for inspection is the invitation. Get your thinking cap and microscope ready; here we go: “It’s been way too long.” Discuss.
