Instagram launches new text tools for photo posts

tl;dr

  • Instagram introduced new text options on Aug. 27, including fonts, animations, and text on photo and carousel posts.
  • Users can now easily add text and layer photos in posts, similar to how they edit stories and reels.
  • The update includes six new custom fonts: Bubble, Deco, Editor, Poster, Signature, and Squeeze.

Instagram announced new text options on Aug. 27. The features include new typefaces, animations, and the ability to add text to photo and carousel posts.

The changes mean users don’t need to edit their photos with a secondary app, such as Canva, and encourage them to spend even more time on Instagram. The social media giant’s blog post said the new tools will “give you more ways to express yourself and make your content your own”.

Photo carousels can quickly have text and stickers added to them now, just like stories and reels. Users simply a photo and then click a text button to add whatever they’d like to say, with a few font options to boot.

What else is new on Instagram?

As well as adding text, Instagram users can now layer other photos on top of their posts. This is done by clicking the gallery button in the top right. Again, just as on stories and reels, tapping the photo sticker will change its shape to a square, circle, heart or star. Expect lots of collage-esque posts in your feed going forward.

This gives you the creative flexibility to make your content stand out and explore new, more entertaining, storytelling with photos and carousels,” Instagram said. One of the key differences between the layers on these photo posts and those on reels is that they are not able to be locked.

Six new custom fonts have also been included in the update. They are Bubble, Deco, Editor, Poster, Signature and Squeeze.

Earlier this month, Instagram increased its maximum photo count for a single post from 10 to 20.  The app has also started rolling out its AI Studio, which will allow creators to make AI versions of themselves that can answer DMs.
