The Indian Institutes of Technology are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. IITs are one of the most prestigious educational institutions in India. This also shows that Samsung is committed to working in the field of next-generation technology development.
IIT Kharagpur and Samsung India
IIT Kharagpur has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Samsung India. This MoU will allow Samsung to set up a digital academy on the campus. This academy will help the students to acquire industry-relevant skills and “become job ready”.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of IIT Kharagpur is all set to host the Samsung Innovation Lab. The objective of this is to train students on the Internet of Things through Tizen-based operating systems. IoT is a network of various sensors and devices that embedded in objects that work collectively towards a common goal. Tizen is being used by Samsung for its mobile phones and home appliances.
This academy is a part of Samsung’s corporate social initiative. The aim of the program is to bridge the digital knowledge gap in India. This will be done by imparting skills to students on cutting-edge technology, according to the statement.
“Samsung is happy to partner with IIT-Kharagpur to help students leverage the growing digital technology market, especially Internet of things (IoT), the future of connectivity“, said YoungKi Byun the managing director of Samsung Research & Development Institute, Delhi.
“This (IoT) lab will enable our students to have hands-on experience with the Tizen operating system as well as facilitate research and app development on IoT platforms,” said the head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sudeshna Sarkar.
Through this partnership with IIT-KGP, the academy planned to train over 100 students in the next three years. The Director of IIT-Kharagpur, Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said, “The partnership will help our students in developing their skills on the emerging areas of IoT and Artificial Intelligence“.
The Curriculum
The curriculum for the Samsung Digital Academy includes the basics of web application development on Tizen, App testing and debugging. The course is said to take place over the period of 14 weeks. This is done through classroom lectures, lab-sessions, assignments, and mini projects.
