We’ll go over two steps, on your main machine and a virtual machine. Let’s start with your main machine.
- Open the Windows settings
- Select Updates and Security
- Select Windows Insider Program in the list of options
- Select Get Started
- Link your desired account
- Select the Dev Channel, this will give you the update for Windows 11
- Reboot your computer as prompted
- Check for updates
- Install the Windows 11 preview after it is downloaded
- You’re done!
How to install the Windows 11 preview on a virtual machine
Here’s how you can install the Windows 11 preview on a virtual machine.
- Install Windows on a virtual machine (we recomend VMWare Fusion)
- Open the Windows settings
- Select Updates and Security
- Select Windows Insider Program in the list of options
- Select Get Started
- Link your desired account
- Select the Dev Channel, this will give you the update for Windows 11
- Reboot your computer as prompted
- Check for updates
- Install the Windows 11 preview after it is downloaded
- You’re done!
How to revert back into Windows 10
The change is reversible because Windows creates a restore point while updating to Windows 11. Here’s how to exercise that option.
- In Windows 11, head to Update and Security
- Select Windows Insider Program from the list
- Use the “Stop Insider Preview Builds” button to opt out of Insider Previews.
- Allow your PC to downgrade back to a stable version
- You’re done!
We recommend users to not install the Windows 11 insider preview as it could cause system errors and certain drivers may not be supported. We do however recommend users to install the Windows 11 insider preview on a virtual machine.
