Google, Samsung and Mozilla leave WebKit

Google, Samsung and Mozilla announced that they will be leaving Apple’s WebKit rendering engine and working on a new browser rendering engine. There will be two flavours one called Blink that Google will continue working on that will be based on WebKit for Chrome devices, while Mozilla and Samsung to make another browser rendering engine called a servo.

Chromium uses a multi-process architecture that is different from other WebKit-based browsers, and supports multiple architectures over the years has led to increased complexity for both WebKit and Chromium project,” wrote Adam Barth, a software engineer at Google on the official Chromium blog . “This,” he continued, “have slowed the pace of collective innovation

Mozilla and Samsungs collaboration on Servo will be an open source rendering engine and will rebuild the Web browser from the ground up on modern hardware. Servo will be written using Rust which is a new programming language developed by Mozilla.

“We are now pleased to announce that together with Samsung we would have both a programming language and Servo Rust, an experimental web browser engine, for [platform-based] ARM and Android. This is an exciting step in the evolution of the two projects will allow us to initiate more research in the Servo on mobile devices. Samsung have contributed to Rust and ARM backend infrastructure required to build a cross-compile to Android, along with many other improvements, “said Brendan Eich, CTO of Mozilla on a post on the official Mozilla blog
