Google’s Project Jarvis AI aims to automate tasks using your web browser – report

Google is reportedly developing artificial intelligence that can operate a web browser to manage daily tasks. The Information reports that the product, codenamed Project Jarvis, will be able to complete tasks such as gathering research, buying a product or even booking a flight.

The tech giant revealed that it may be ready for preview as early as December, alongside the release of its next flagship Gemini large language model, which sources say will help power the product.

What is Google Jarvis?

In a nod to J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man, the AI reportedly “responds to a person’s commands by capturing frequent screenshots of what’s on their computer screen, and interpreting the shots before taking actions like clicking on a button or typing into a text field.”

The report also suggests it “operates relatively slowly because the model needs to think for a few seconds before taking each action.” It will be designed to work with Chrome to assist with tasks. It comes as Gemini Live, Google’s AI chatbot, has received several updates, including support for more languages and integration with Google Meet, Photos, and other applications.

Speaking about AI agents at I/O 2024, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said: “I think about them as intelligent systems that show reasoning, planning, and memory, are able to ‘think’ multiple steps ahead, and work across software and systems, all to get something done on your behalf, and most importantly, under your supervision.”

The news of Jarvis arrives just days after ReadWrite reported that Anthropic introduced a similar yet seemingly more expansive feature for its Claude AI. The company claims has been equipped with computer skills that allow it to “use a wide range of standard tools and software programs designed for people.”

The Information points out that Google’s plan to showcase Jarvis in December is still tentative and may change. The company is reportedly considering releasing it to a limited group of testers to identify and address any bugs.
