Google is gearing up to test a new AI feature that will convert your Google Discover and Search history into a podcast. This will be rolling out first to the US on Android and iOS, and presumed if successful will start to appear in other countries.
It’s being made available in the Google app, but at the moment you’ll need to enable it in Search Labs in the top left-hand corner of the app.
Discover is Google’s algorithm-run feed that collates articles, videos, and web pages that you might be interested in.
Daily Listen is potentially using the company’s NotebookLM Audio Overview tech. This takes your imported notes and turns them into a podcast. It was also used in Spotify Wrapped, with a short AI-generated podcast talking about your music tastes for the year.
According to 9to5Google, the audio feed has sections similar to a YouTube video that you’ll be able to jump to. It’ll also provide a transcript if you can’t listen to audio at that time.
By leveraging this information, Google intends to provide an audio roundup dubbed “Daily Listen”, rather than drive users to the pages.
Google hounded for ruining search engine with AI
Google has come under fire from publications in the last 12 months, as it updated its search algorithms and started embedding an AI-generated summary at the top searches. Websites have found that traffic has plummeted, leading to industry stalwarts like AnandTech to shut down.
It’s also resulted in mass layoffs in the journalism and writing industries, as traffic is diverted away from pages.
The generative AI summaries have also been lambasted online for their inaccuracies and lack of accountability. Upon its launch, it began telling people to put glue on pizza to make the cheese stretchy.
More recent examples have included making up information about potential upcoming movies like John Wick 5 or DC’s “in-universe” Batman movie.
