The gambling regulators in both the UK and Ireland have come together to sign an agreement which will establish a framework for cooperation.
The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) hosted the CEO of the UK Gambling Commission in Dublin last week (April 2).
It was then that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was formally signed by the two, with this setting out the broad principles of collaboration.
The aims of both parties are to enable a closer working relationship which will help each organization’s ability to ‘discharge their respective duties and functions.’
Following the signing, a meeting was conducted which included discussions on compliance, monitoring, and enforcement, as well as other regulatory matters relevant to both jurisdictions.
The 30-39 age group are twice as likely to suffer from Problem Gambling when compared to the national average in Ireland.

The CEO of the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, Anne Marie Caulfield said: “This Memorandum of Understand with the UK Gambling Commission is an important step in formalising the working relationship between the two regulators and I would like to thank Andrew Rhodes, and a number of his colleagues across the various areas of the Commission for their advice and support over the past number of months.
“Ireland and the UK share many of the same operators and gambling practices, so putting this agreement in place will enhance our ability to share information and discharge our respective regulatory responsibilities effectively.
“Open dialogue and close cooperation between both jurisdictions is paramount and I greatly look forward to continuing this close cooperation’s for the years to come.”
This isn’t the first agreement the Irish gambling watchdog hopes to establish either, as they describe this as being “the first of a series of MOUs which the GRAI intends to put in place with other Gambling Regulators across the EU in the months ahead.”
This comes after the independent board was only signed into action last month, with it being described as being a ‘new era’ for the country.
