Recently we have had Apple strutting their stuff about their iPhone 5S and 5C SmartPhones and proclaiming that they will have the first 64-bit processor in the form of their fancy new 64-bit A7 CPU. Samsung Co-CEO JK Shin has told Korean Times that Samsung’s future handsets will also include 64-bit Processors “in the shortest time”. This is also inline with ARM road maps that have 64-bit architectures in the pipeline.
Samsung Tizen devices launching early next year could be 64 bit contenders and this is a natural transition for Tizen as it is already a 64 bit compliant OS (with release of Tizen 2.0) unlike Android and possibly others that need some major software component rewriting in order to take advantage of the new architecture.
It looks like the future hardware wars are not only about GigaHertz, MegaBytes or Megapixels but also now includes “bits”.
