Last month we revealed that Samsung will be venturing into the Android Go category with the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core. Though the name is not official yet, a Samsung device, with model number SM-J260G, is already listed in the Geekbench database, which is where most of the upcoming devices are initially spotted. Now a month later, we have more details on the phone, and some specs too.
Samsung has been testing the device, SM-J260, in four markets on the Indian subcontinent – India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These countries have traditionally been the company’s debut markets for its budget offerings. And, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone if this handset was kept limited to these four countries. However, Samsung seems to have bigger plans, as it’s now testing the phone in a number of new markets across Asia, Europe and Latin America.
A test model of the phone, SM-J260F, is being tested in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Caucasus Countries, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. Samsung’s testing the model number SM-J206M in Colombia, Paraguay, Chile Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Peru and Panada. Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam are the latest Asian countries where Samsung is testing the model SM-J260G.
Samsung testing a budget phone in these many markets is a bit surprising but makes sense in a way too. Launching an Android Go device in dozens of markets across the globe will enable the company to determine if the stock Android-powered phone will work.
Coming to the specifications part, Techie Drive has unearthed a new spec sheet for the Samsung model number SM-J206F. Looking at the sheet, we can confirm that Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone has no surprises as an entry-level smartphone. It has a 1.4GHz Samsung Exynos 7570 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB ROM.
The phone’s got an 8MP camera at the back and a 5MP selfie-camera in the front and houses a 2,600 mAh battery underneath. Quite surprisingly though, the phone sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display.
As I said, this spec sheet specifically mentions the model number SM-J206F. But we do expect Samsung to offer the same hardware on the other two models, SM-J206M and SM-J206G, as well. For the time being, we will have to wait and see if these specs turn out to be accurate.
