Elon Musk has launched his AI company’s latest model, Grok 3, to premium users on X, claiming it’s the ‘smartest on Earth’.
Billionaire CEO Elon Musk’s xAI launched Grok 3 on Tuesday for iOS and the web with claims that the new model has ten times more compute than its previous version.
“Grok 3 is an order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2,” Musk said during the live-streamed launch on Tuesday, February 18. “[It’s a] maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct.”
The AI model has been in development for several months and was originally intended to be released in 2024. It was trained using a data centre in Memphis, boasting over 200,000 GPUs dedicated to Grok 3.
Grok 3 versus OpenAI
xAI claims that Grok 3 can outperform OpenAI on various benchmarks, including the widely-used AIME test that evaluated learning models on math, physics, biology, and chemistry problem-solving skills.
This comparison comes after Musk launched a $97.4 billion bid to take over OpenAI, less than a year after the billionaire sued CEO Sam Altman and the company for allegedly violating its original goals to build AI for the benefit of humanity and not for financial gain.
As it stands, it doesn’t seem likely that the sale will go in the billionaire’s favour, with the OpenAI board rejecting the takeover bid and declaring on Friday, February 14 that the company is “not for sale”.
Grok 3 is currently available to Premium+ subscribers on X, with plans to launch a new subscription plan called SuperGrok for the Grok mobile app and Grok.com website users.
Grok users can access different modes within Grok 3, including one that requires the chatbot to “Think,” and another “Big Brain” mode for more complex queries that require deeper computing. The DeepSearch feature can also search the web and data from X to provide summary responses.
Future plans for the model including launching a voice mode, as well as previously-stated goals from Musk to open-source the latest version of the model.
