Dead Cells gets one final update, six years after release

tl;dr

  • Dead Cells receives its final update after six years, bringing new mobs, weapons, mutations, and customization options.
  • Motion Twin and Evil Empire thanked fans for their support, marking the end of an era for the iconic roguelike game.
  • Motion Twin will shift focus to their new game, Windblown, which is due to enter Steam Early Access later this year.

The critically acclaimed roguelike Dead Cells has been given one last, and final, update — six years after it first launched.

Motion Twin Studios made the surprise announcement to fans of the Metroidvania-style game and it brings a host of content to boot. In a Steam post, the company announced limited-time deals to celebrate the end of an era, alongside some of the new patch features.

Dead Cells gets final content update

Motion Twin posted to X (formerly Twitter) saying “The End is Near!” regarding the final batch of Dead Cells content set to drop for fans of the genre-defining title.

Motion Twin breaks down all the changes coming in the Steam update, but the key takeaways are (quoting the studio):

  • New additions based on one of our most iconic mechanics, Curse: 3 new mobs, 3 new weapons, 3 new mutations and a new biome effect for you to choose whether you are gonna take the risk for more rewards or not.
  • New legendary affixes.
  • 40+ new heads for customization options.
  • New routing: you can now go to both Return to Castlevania biomes in one run.
  • More accessibility options.

The end of an era for Motion Twin and Dead Cells

The games company also shouted out to Evil Empire Studio for their work on the Return to Castlevania content. This brought fans of the 2D side-scrollers back to the land of the Belmonts and the undead lord Dracula.

Evil Empire said, “Welp, this is it – the last update we made for Dead Cells (and its last update ever) is out now 🫡 Huge thanks to everyone in the community, we had such a great time creating insane content with you, and of course thank you @motiontwin for letting us play with your creation!”

Dead Cells launched for Windows PC on Aug. 7, 2018. A version for PlayStation 5 was published just last year, in June 2023.

The sun may be setting on a title that opened pathways for some of the more recent takes on the roguelike genre, but Dead Cells will always remain a defining game. Motion Twin will be taking its experience with Dead Cells into the studio’s new venture, Windblown, which will be available in Steam early access sometime later this year.

“Just as you helped us shape Dead Cells during its Early Access period, we would like to gather your thoughts to help make Windblown as great as it can possibly be,” Motion Twin said. “The Early Access period will help us improve constantly on the game based on your feedback.”
