GPD Win 2 is termed as a handheld gaming PC that is powered by Windows 10. You can easily pop this devil in your jacket pocket and get on the road. It’s not a laptop or tablet replacement but definitely can have its uses.
The small keyboard could be ideal for a bit of typing on the go or a bit of Terminal work, but nothing you would use to bang out a long essay or even this article with. If you are like me and tired of boring old windows, then you might be able to run something else on it, something else like Ubuntu? Well, Brad from Lilliputing has got his hands on one and put it through its paces with some popular Linux distributions.
Luckily, it is pretty easy to boot the GPD Win 2 from a USB flash drive. All you need to do is change the boot sequence, like any traditional Windows computer, and you’re away. You can choose to Install the OS locally or run off the USB stick. As everything might not go as smooth as one might want, driver issues etc, it’s a safer bet to run it off the stick before you start feeling a bit more adventurous.
This is a prototype that has had some issues with the touchscreen, touchpad and going into sleep mode. It is hoped that these points are resolved before the final product ships. Everything else seems to work, including the ever important WiFi! Different OS’s were tested with Ubuntu 17.10, Fedora 27, Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, Xubuntu 17.10, Lubuntu 17.10, and Debian 9.03 with varying degrees of success.
If you’re into tinkering then you might be pleased to know that you can also overclock the CPU, but obviously to the detriment of the relatively small battery. Check out the videos below to see it in action.
