Atomfall survival game will be more than just a “British Fallout”

Since its trailer drop in November, Atomfall has been hailed as a “British Fallout” and generated a lot of hype for a game set in an idyllic-yet-apocalyptic English landscape. But the studio behind the game – Rebellion Developments – has promised the game offers more than just a “Fallout in Britain” experience. For starters, it’s much more survival-focused than Fallout, with crafting mechanics and a less traditional quest storyline/campaign. Here’s what we know about this upcoming post-apocalyptic game:

The game is inspired by the Windscale nuclear disaster, which occurred in Northern England on the 10 October 1957 and was the worst nuclear accident in the United Kingdom’s history. This Nuclear historical context and its 1950s-esque vibe are the biggest parallels between Fallout and Atomfall. As a result this game has garnered the nickname “British Fallout”, despite the fact it doesn’t share any genre similarities with the Bethesda title. Instead, Atomfall is advertised as a post-apocalyptic survival game with a focus on investigation and exploration as players learn about what caused the Nuclear fallout.

In an interview with GameRadar, art director Ryan Greene from Rebellion Developments stated Atomfall had more in common with games like L.A. Noir, given that it has more open-ended and fluid quest and NPC design.  He definitively says that “Atomfall is a detective game […] [and] a survival game” and doesn’t fall into the RPG genre. There are no quests, instead players are expected to follow leads and research things in the world.

Atomfall Release Date and Platforms

As of right now, Atomfall is scheduled to release on March 27th 2025 on multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It is available to pre-order and players can purchase a standard or deluxe version, with the latter offering additional goodies and exclusive access to the game 3 days prior to the official release.

Is Atomfall a co-op game?

Rebellion Developments have confirmed that Atomfall is a single-player game and will not officially offer any multiplayer game mode. Despite being a survival game (which these days are more often than not multiplayer), you won’t be able to play Atomfall with your friends, and instead you’ll have to solve the mysteries of the Windscale nuclear disaster on your own. I wouldn’t put it past modders to figure out a way of making it multiplayer though – watch this space!
