Even at a Tizen devoted blog we have to respect the engineers of Cupertino. According to sources within the industry Apple baffled competition with the first 64-bit system-on-a-chip. Or, in hte words of the source: “It set off panic in the industry”. Most were working toward 64-bit for mobile platforms and now they have a sample to look at. “We were slack-jawed, and stunned, and unprepared,” the source said. “It’s not that big a performance difference right now, since most current software won’t benefit.
Once again it’s an innovation that will take some time to get benefitted from, like may still work on a 32-bit windows or mac. After all, you need applications that benefit from the 64-bit architecture, not because they mimic a 32 bit set up. But as is often the case: “It’s there and I want it!” But in Spinal Tap terms it’s like, 32 more, and now everyone wants it.”
As was to be expected, Apple jumping to the frontiers of roadmaps have led to executives being re-moted. Like the guy from Qualcomm who, at first, in public, named it a marketing gimmick, as there were no apps that can benefit. The company however changed it’s course and the executive now has other things to do for Qualcomms’ greater good. “The roadmap for 64-bit was nowhere close to Apple’s, since no one thought it was that essential,” an unknow source at Qualcomm said.
What about the rest?
It’s to be expected that Qualcomm, Broadcom and Nvidia will send their 64-bit quad-core chips to several Android devices in hte first half of 2014. Samsung claims that its 64-bit Exynos processor is already geared up for production. Most notably however is Google that has not yet announced that it’s working on development work that would be necessary to fully take advantage of 64-bit operation for Android. And Tizen? Let’s hope Samsung will make a world splash with a Tizen operated 64-bit mobile device. Preferably to be field tested by us so we can drive you mad with desire!
