Apple Intelligence will support more languages over course of year

TLDR

  • Apple Intelligence will expand language support starting with US English in iOS 18.
  • More languages, including French, German, and Chinese, will be added throughout next year.
  • Apple Intelligence won't work for users in the EU or those with devices from mainland China.

Apple has today announced it’ll be expanding the languages that Apple Intelligence can support over the coming year.

When the AI-focused tool is added to the iPhones in the iOS 18 update, it’ll launch exclusively in US English.

In December, this support will expand to other variants of the English language, including English (Australia), English (Canada), English (New Zealand), English (South Africa), and English (UK).

Apple Intelligence is the company’s new cross-platform artificial intelligence enhancement which will make its way to the iPhone, iPad, and Macs. It includes a suite of AI features ranging from an upgraded version of Siri to Genmoji and Writing Tools.

In a support page titled ‘How to get Apple Intelligence on iPhone,’ the technology giant writes that “over the course of next year, Apple Intelligence will expand to more languages.”

This will include Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, and “others.”

While some European-based languages will be introduced, the tool will not work for those in the EU and if their Apple ID Country/Region is listed as a place within the European Union. It’s only when traveling outside of this that it will work when the device language and Siri language are set to one that is supported.

The AI features will also not work for iPhone models purchased in mainland China. Once this becomes available, Apple Intelligence will be able to be activated.

What is included in the first Apple Intelligence rollout?

This news comes just days before the iPhone 16 will be available in stores on September 20. While the technology giant went heavy on its announcement of the AI tool, the new phones will not yet include Apple Intelligence.

The 16 series will support a handful of features from the AI integrations later this fall, with more to be rolled out in 2025. The first set of features include:

  • Writing Tools
  • Clean Up in Photos
  • Create a Memory movie in Photos
  • Natural language search in Photos
  • Notification summaries
  • Reduce Interruptions Focus
  • Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing in Focus
  • Priority messages in Mail
  • Smart Reply in Mail and Messages
  • Summaries in Mail and Messages
  • Siri enhancements, including product knowledge, more resilient request handling, new look and feel, more natural voice, the ability to type to Siri, and more

The company says “additional features will roll out in the months to come.”
