Anthropic CEO predicts AI could surpass humans, forming ‘country of geniuses’

TLDR

  • Anthropic CEO predicts AI will surpass human intelligence, forming a “country of geniuses” by 2027.
  • Amodei criticized the Paris AI Summit as a “missed opportunity” to address AI’s growing risks.
  • Anthropic launched an Economic Index to track AI’s impact on economic activities worldwide.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has predicted that AI models may surpass human capabilities and produce a “country of geniuses” within two to three years, after criticizing this week’s AI Summit in Paris.

In a blog post published on Tuesday (Feb. 11), Amodei forecasted that by 2026 or 2027, AI systems will be so advanced that it’ll be like an entirely new state of highly intelligent beings emerging on the global stage. The Anthropic co-founder wrote that it would be the equivalent of a “‘country of geniuses in a datacenter’—with the profound economic, societal, and security implications that would bring.”

Paris Summit a ‘missed opportunity’ to help AI surpass humans

However, the entrepreneur called the Paris summit a “missed opportunity,” denouncing the slow pace of global efforts to regulate AI. His warning comes at a turning point, with both democratic and authoritarian nations racing for dominance in AI development.

He outlined three critical issues that need to be addressed to ensure that AI risks are mitigated. These include democratic societies taking the lead in AI by governing the technology’s supply chain. Amodei also stressed that international discussions on AI “must more fully address the technology’s growing security risks.”

The final point is that while AI has the potential to accelerate economic growth worldwide, it could also be highly disruptive. As a result, Anthropic released the Anthropic Economic Index on Tuesday, which tracks the distribution of economic activities for which people are currently using its AI systems.

The summit exposed growing divisions in how countries approach AI regulation. US Vice President JD Vance pushed back against European proposals, calling them “massive” and overly restrictive. Meanwhile, both the US and UK stood their ground and refused to sign the summit’s commitments.

Anthropic itself was established in 2021 by Amodei and his sister, Daniela Amodei, along with five other former OpenAI employees. The company subsequently became a serious competitor to OpenAI, going head-to-head with models like GPT-4 and ChatGPT. Lately, its Claude 3.5 Sonnet model has been getting a lot of praise from AI users and continues to rank high in industry benchmarks.
