The Navy’s Newest Warship is Powered by Linux

The USS warship Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is scheduled to be put to sea later this year, but beating at its heart will be something different. Nothing like this has ever been known in the US Navy’s fleet.
This $3.5 billon ship is obviously state of the art with advanced technology which includes a virtual data center powered by off-the-shelf server hardware, various flavors of Linux, which have over 6 million lines of code.
Engineers have been testing the systems at the heart of the Zumwalt and are also preparing to do the same for the next ship, the USS Michael Monsoor which is already well into construction.
Linux already helps power systems in various Military systems providing mission critical dependancy but this is the first time that this type and scale of implementation has been seen in a warship. It looks like Linux is helping to push the boundaries further ….
