AGL 2013 User Experience Contest: Design the Future of Automotive Infotainment
Enter the contest and design the user experience you would like to see in your next car using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. We provide a framework for you to download, modify and extend as your creativity inspires you. The sky is the limit. You may create a new theme for the existing applications, create new applications, etc.

The 2013 AGL User Experience Contest (the “Contest”) has the theme “Design the Future of Automotive Infotainment User Experience”, and is designed to give eligible participants (“Entrants” or “You”) the opportunity to take that kernel of an idea and turn it into an inspiring user interface design for an opportunity to see your work featured in a future vehicle. The architect and designer of the winning user experience will have an opportunity to collaborate on a proof-of-concept with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) besides other attractive prizes. All prizes will be awarded in accordance with these Official Rules (the “Rules”).
- Binding Agreement. In order to enter the Contest, you must agree to these Rules. Please read these Rules carefully to ensure you understand and agree to them. Any submission of an entry in the Contest constitutes agreement to these Rules. You may not submit an entry to the Contest and are not eligible to receive the prizes described in these Rules unless you agree to these Rules. These Rules form a binding legal agreement between you and The Linux Foundation with respect to the Contest.
- Sponsor. The Contest is sponsored by The Linux Foundation, an Oregon nonprofit corporation with a principal place of business at 660 York Street, Suite 102, San Francisco, CA 94110.
- Eligibility. Persons 18 years of age or older are eligible to participate in the contest, except for employees of The Linux Foundation and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses). The contest is void and residents ineligible where the Contest is prohibited or restricted by law. The Linux Foundation reserves the right to disqualify any Entrant who violates these rules, or in the sole discretion of the Linux Foundation is found to be cheating, intimidating other participants or voters, submitting false information, or otherwise tampering with the Contest process.
- How to Enter. Follow these steps to enter the contest:
- Download the AGL UX SDK:
- Install the demo on your system following the instructions and make sure that it works.
- Create your own UI and applications by modifying the source files for the ‘engine’.
- Create a ZIP archive of the “Home” directory containing your new ‘engine’.
- Create a ZIP archive of your source files of you engine.
- Submit both ZIP archives along with your name, address, phone number and a description of your entry. To be entered into the contest, entrants must submit their entries by 11:55 p.m. PDT on May 17, 2013. All submissions must be sent to [email protected].
- Selection of Winners. Judges from Jaguar Land Rover and the Linux Foundation will choose a winner and 2 runners up in the categories

- Best New Concept / Additional Feature
from the submissions received by the deadline, based on functionality, stability, workflow, layout, code quality, creativity, originality, novelty and general adherence to the Contest theme and adherence to these rules. Winners and runners up will be announced on May 28, 2013 during the Automotive Linux Summit Spring in Tokyo/Japan. Winners and runners up will be notified via the email address submitted with the entry.
- Intellectual Property Rights. You agree that if your solution is one of the finalists, you will license your solution under the same license the original framework has been made available (see below). This license grants anyone “without limiation the right to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software” with proper attribution given to the original designer. In addition, you will grant the Linux Foundation a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, transferable, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, adapt, modify, publish, distribute, publicly perform, create a derivative work from, and publicly display the design for any purpose, with or without attribution. You also agree to waive any moral rights in the work with respect to the Linux Foundations use of the work. Entrant will notify the Linux Foundation immediately of any legal claims or allegations regarding the work.
- The Prizes. The first place winner as well as the two runners up in each category will receive a tablet computer valued at $450. In addition to that the first place winner will get the opportunity to collaborate with Jaguar Land Rover and Automotive Grade Linux on a proof-of-concept. First place winners and runners up do not have to be present at the announcement on May 28, 2013 to receive their prize.
- Taxes. AWARDS OF PRIZES TO POTENTIAL WINNERS ARE SUBJECT TO THE EXPRESS REQUIREMENT THAT THEY SUBMIT TO THE LINUX FOUNDATION ALL DOCUMENTATION REQUESTED BY THE LINUX FOUNDATION TO PERMIT IT TO COMPLY WITH ALL APPLICABLE STATE, FEDERAL AND LOCAL TAX REPORTING. ALL PRIZES WILL BE NET OF ANY TAXES THE LINUX FOUNDATION IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO WITHHOLD. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ALL TAXES IMPOSED ON PRIZES ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNERS. In order to receive a prize, potential winners must submit tax documentation requested by The Linux Foundation or otherwise required by applicable law, to The Linux Foundation or the relevant tax authority, as determined by applicable law. The potential winner is responsible for ensuring compliance with all the applicable tax laws and filing requirements. If a potential winner fails to provide such documentation or comply with such laws, the prize may be forfeited and The Linux Foundation may, in its sole discretion, select an alternate potential winner.
- Publicity. Entrants consent to The Linux Foundation using their name, photograph or other likeness, and/or hometown if they are a finalist.
- Privacy. Entrants agree that personal data submitted with an entry, including name, mailing address, phone number, and email address may be collected, processed, stored and otherwise used by the Linux Foundation and its affiliates for the purposes of conducting, publicizing and/or administering the Contest. By entering the Contest, Entrants agree to the transmission, processing, disclosing and storage of this personal data by the Linux Foundation and its affiliates. Data in submissions will be governed by the Linux Foundation privacy policy, located at http://www.linuxfoundation.org/privacy.
- Miscellaneous. All applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. Entry in the contest constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of these Official Rules. Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules, and by the decisions of Sponsor, which are final and binding in all respects. Any disputes that may arise in connection with the drawing shall be governed in all respects by the laws of the State of California without regard to the conflicts of laws principles of any jurisdiction. No part of this Contest or the rules shall be considered an offer or contract for employment. Entrants agree that their submissions contain no confidential or secret information. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Rules will not constitute a waiver of that or any other provision. If any provision(s) of these Rules are held to be invalid or unenforceable, all remaining provisions hereof will remain in full force and effect. The exclusive venue for any such disputes shall be the state and/or federal courts located in the city and County of San Francisco in the State of California.
