Threads could soon see a permanent change-up to its feed, as the CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces some new testing to the default feed.
On Monday (November 25) the Meta founder took to the app to share the news: “Testing the option to choose any feed – – For You, following, or a custom one – – as your default.
“Also making this more visible in the app. Interested to see how and if people use this.”
Currently, the For You feed is the default on mobile and web. While you can switch between options, it always reverts back to the original.
It was back in April of 2024 when a user replied to a Threads post asking if there is a way to permanently have the default be set to Following. At the time, Threads answer simply explained how to toggle between the options which caused others to reply asking for a resolution.
This change-up comes just four days after the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said the platform was ‘rebalancing ranking.’
He said: “We are rebalancing ranking to prioritize content from people you follow, which will mean less recommended content from accounts you don’t follow and more posts from the accounts you do starting today.
“For you creators out there, you should see unconnected reach go down and connected reach go up.
“This is definitely a work in progress – balancing the ability to reach followers and overall engagement is tricky – thanks for your patience and keep the feedback coming.”
These recent alterations come as Bluesky hits 20 million users and offers strong competition to the Meta platform.
How to change to a default feed on Threads
Not everyone will have access to the testing of this potential new feature, but those who are can make the switch over quite easily.
Users in the test will be able to hold down a feed option at the top which will prompt an ‘edit feeds’ button. This will then allow people to choose the order, so whichever feed option is placed first will become the default.
This will then be the feed you see every time you open the app or visit on the web.
