Tetris celebrates 40 years with an ‘interactive museum’ collection on Switch

tl;dr

  • Tetris celebrates its 40th anniversary with the release of the Tetris Forever compilation on Nintendo Switch in 2024.
  • Announced during the Nintendo Direct, the collection will include at least nine Tetris versions from the past 40 years.
  • The release date is set for late 2024, with additional NES content coming to Nintendo Switch Online this winter.

Tetris officially marks its 40th anniversary this year (despite some dispute as to when it originally launched) and in celebration of that, a collection of several of its versions will come to Nintendo Switch later in 2024.

Announced during Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase livestream, the Tetris Forever compilation will include at least nine titles games. No specific date was given for its release, other than sometime before the end of the year.

This is the third anthology game from Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master Series. The first two were The Making of Karateka and Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story.

What is included in Tetris Forever?

Featured in the Nintendo Direct promo were the 1988 Famicom version; Tetris 2 + BomBliss; and Tetris Battle Gaiden. Fans can also expect to see Hatris and Super BomBliss games in the compilation.

Fans will also be able to play something called Tetris Time Warp, which is a standard game of Tetris that switches among the series’ different visual styles over the past 40 years. A documentary about the game will also be included in the compilation, similar to Digital Eclipse’s previous work. This will focus on the game’s history as well as those who brought it out of the former Soviet Union.

Additionally, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version of the game will be available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers sometime this winter.

Tetris’ NES version, which launched in 1989, made headlines in January when the first known human, Blue Scuti, beat the game and reached its kill screen. Previously, only AI programs had achieved this.

Fans were also told to “be on the lookout” for a Tetris 99 Maximus Cup event later this winter. These events take place regularly within the Switch game, with the 42nd iteration running earlier this month.

Elsewhere in Tuesday’s showcase, Nintendo announced a variety of other third-party games coming to the Switch in the final stretch of 2024, including Yakuza Kiwami.
