Ben Edwards VP of Community & Developer Advocacy
Ben is a catalyst to the various tech, design, and entrepreneur communities of which he is a part. He brings those talents and enthusiasm to his role at SmartThings where he heads up community development and product evangelism activities. Prior to founding SmartThings, Ben was a partner at Refactr, a forerunning agile software consultancy specializing in developing custom software for demanding clients. After Refactr’s work with CloudProfile resulted in an acquisition by ReachLocal, Ben and the Refactr team joined ReachLocal as a crucial part of that company’s IPO. Ben started the non-profit, minne✱, to foster technology and startup activity in Minnesota. Since 2006 that community and event series has grown into one of the largest barcamps in the world.
Tim Slagle Developer Support Specialist
Tim grew up in Chicago, IL and recently relocated to the bay area to work with SmartThings. He is incredibly passionate about the IoT and connected home space. He started learning groovy in the SmartThings community where he fell in love with the SmartThings vision and writing groovy. He loves to write code that solves real world problems and enhance people’s lives through connected systems. He also works closely with a mentorship and leadership team based in Chicago where he has helped mentor 100s of up and coming leaders in the Chicagoland Area. Speaking to groups as large as 200 people on becoming better leaders in the 21st century. He is also a lover of all things sweet and ice cream. He is only coming to this event to steal Jim’s ice cream.
Jim Anderson Documentation Developer
Jim Anderson has been writing, testing, designing, and leading software projects for nearly ten years. He has held various positions in the software industry, from software engineer, to scrum master and team lead, to product manager. Prior to his career in software, he was a preschool teacher at a Head Start in Saint Paul for nine years. As a documentation developer at SmartThings, he can combine his passion for software and education.
Guest Speaker: Patrick Stuart Live Code Fridays Host
Patrick Stuart has been involved in the internet since before the internet. Hosting a small BBS in the late 80s on his mom’s shared fax line connected to an X10 switch he bought with his employee discount at Radio Shack to automatically turn it on after 6pm and off before 8am allowed him to “borrow” that phone line and launch “After 6 BBS”. From there, Patrick has been involved in various hacking groups, but then joined the corporate world working for Xerox Corporation as a Systems Analyst and Production Consultant.
Patrick has also been the host of a variety of Podcasts, most notably, Today in Print and Money Well Spent and currently hosts “Live Coding Fridays”, a show produced in his newly created Stuarttech Studios and livestreamed on Youtube. Patrick has also dabbled into the world of Stand Up Comedy, having performed over 250 shows opening and hosting for many great comics, including Louie Anderson, Kevin Meaney and Jim Wiggins. Patrick donates all the money he earns from comedy to charity.
