Today, as expected, Samsung have launched a new smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch, yes, the name change is real (previously it has been known as the Gear S4). At the Samsung Unpacked event, we were given the Note 9 and the Galaxy Watch. The big headline for us is the watch will not be running Wear OS, as speculated once upon a time, but the Galaxy Watch will be running Tizen 4.0.
We will have two models to choose from: 46mm available in silver and a 42mm black and rose gold versions. Samsung have realised that “one size does not fit all” and some might find a smaller watch face appealing.
Features and specifications
– Comes in two sizes: 1.3-inch (46mm) or 1.2-inch (42mm) with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels
– Battery size is 472mAh (46mm) or 270mAh (42mm) – Good enough for “Several days” charge
– Super AMOLED touch display with new Gorilla DX+ glass
– 5 ATM water resistance and IP68 dust resistance.
– Powered by Tizen OS 4.0
– Exynos 9110 1.15 GHz dual-core processor
– A heart rate monitor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer
– LTE version has 1.15GB of RAM and 4GB of storage
– Bluetooth version has 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage
There will be wireless charging s standard. The watch will release first in the US on August 24th, followed by Korea on August 31st. The rest of us will have to wait until September 14th to get our hands on it. The Galaxy Watch will be priced at $329.99 for the 42mm version and $349.99 for the 46mm version. You will be able to find it at the usual outlets such as Amazon, Best Buy and also direct from Samsung. As usual, you will have to wait a little longer, or potentially a lot longer depending on where you live, for the 3G / LTE versions to go on sale. In the US they will be sold directly through carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Samsung.com later this year. Samsung is sweetening its deal with throwing in a FREE watch band if you order BEFORE September 8th.
The Galaxy Watch will come with improved health features over its predecessor. It is a watch that actually aids you in relaxing. Its knows your base heartland so any suspicious deviations it asks you to relax and gives you guidance on how to do it. The battery life will last substantially longer due to the new optimised dual-core Exynos 9110 processor and the bigger battery (definitely on the 46mm version).
For the fitness active people, this watch is officially “sweatproof” and also swimming rating of 5-ATM; meaning you can submerge it up to 50m depth. Samsung’s has now 39 different types of workouts that you can log, but some, like biking and running, can automatically be detected and logged. You can track your sleep patterns with a new advanced sleep tracker that monitors all levels of sleep, including REM cycles.
