Samsung Doubles Smartwatch Market Share, Closing Gap on Apple

According to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple have shipped 1.6 million smartwatches in Q2 2016, which sounds impressive but is a sharp fall from the 3.6 million it shipped the previous year. The companies overall market share has shrunk from 72% to 47% as it was the only vendor in the top 5 to show a decline in the number of shipments. Top 5 include Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, LG Electronics, and Garmin.

The report shows that Samsung have doubled their year-on-year market share going from 7% to 16%, with corresponding shipments of 400,000 to 600,000. Last year Apple had a whopping 65% market share advantage over Samsung which has now dropped to 31%. It will be Interesting to see what the difference the launch of the Gear S3 and the iWatch 2 make to next years figures. We expect the S3 to launch at IFA 2016 in September with a luxury edition being released early next year.
The report did not take into account wearable trackers that did not have an app ecosystem and could not be considered a smartwatch.
