Samsung Electronics announced their next high end System On a Chip (SOC) yesterday with the launch of the Exynos 9 series 8895. The Exynos 8895 application processor is the first of its kind to be manufactured based on the most advanced 10 nanometer FinFET fabrication process. Samsung claims that the processor takes 40% less power compared to 14nm based processors and at the same time improves on performance by upto 27%.
The Exynos 8895 is also the first processor to feature an embedded gigabit LTE modem that supports 5CA (five carrier aggregation) and has a maximum downlink of 1Gbps with 5CA thanks to CAT.16 technology and upto 150MBPs (Cat.13) uplink with 2CA.
The 8895 has an Octacore CPU based on big.LITTLE architecture which comprises of four powerful custom cores designed by Samsung and four power efficient ARM Cortex A53 cores. This allows the Exynos chip to maintain balance between power and battery life based on the type of use which can range over aplications such as AI,deep learning, etc.
The MALI-G71 GPU embedded in the Exynos 8895 allows for a rich multimedia experience by supporting low latency 4K UHD VR content and immersive gaming experiences with high graphics and textures. This should benifit highly for future GearVR experiences. The Exynos 8895 also supports 4K UHD recording at upto 120fps.
The Exynos 8895 also has a separate processor unit for higher security features such as fingerprint scanners, Iris recognition as biometric based payment solutions are getting mainstream. The8895 aso has a Vision Processing Unit (VPU) which specializes in visual recognition and analyzing items movements for improved video tracking, panoramic image processing, and machine vision technology.
The Exynos 9 Series 8895 is under mass production at the moment and can be expected to take place in one of Samsung’s smartphones very soon.
