Rockchip launches new IoT and AI focused chips

Chinese chip maker Rockchip has just announced two new processors with specific capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). The new chips, Rockchip RK3308 and Rockchip Gemini, are aimed at IoT devices like smart speakers and displays. Both of the new processors are quad-core, ARM Cortex-A35 chips.

Rockchip RK3308

The Rockchip RK3308 is an entry-level chip aimed at mainstream devices. It is a quad core, ARM Cortex-A35 processor with 64 bit support. This is the first time Rockchip has integrated this type of cores into its system-on-chips (SoCs). The chip has multiple audio input interfaces, and greater energy efficiency compared to the company’s previous entry-level chip RK3229, launched in 2016.

Rockchip Gemini

By naming its chip “Gemini,” Rockchip seems to release a new nomenclature, though one should not be surprised if it acquires a numbering in the future. But, its not just about nomenclature. The company, which specialises in low-cost processors, has also upped its ante with the Gemini chip. Targeted at high-end products, the new chip have a Dvalin MP2 GPU along with the four Cortex-A35 cores. Gemini also features better audio and video features including a multi-channel audio interface, LCD display and camera support. It should now be fair to say that the Rockchip Gemini is destined to the high range sector of products. But we have no idea why Rockchip named it “Gemini.” Any guesses?

In an era of IoT and artificial intelligence, the demand for new and better processors, compatible to all the modern needs, goes on increasing every single day. Of course, there’d be demand for cheaper processors and Rockchip might have just put a foot ahead to seize-up that segment. Well done, Rockchip!
