Qualcomm offers more insight on AR collaboration with Samsung and Google

tl;dr

  • Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google are collaborating on smart glasses, aiming to make them as common as regular glasses.
  • The collaboration focuses on pairing smart glasses with smartphones, delivering new AI-powered experiences across devices.
  • Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip, revealed in Berlin, enhances its position in AI and mobile computing.

Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google’s collaboration on an augmented reality project, first announced in 2023, is beginning to take shape. Speaking to CNBC, Qualcomm’s chief executive spoke to CNBC about where things stand with this collaboration, and how much it depends on mainstreaming the use of smart glasses.

“What I expect to come out of this partnership, I want everyone that has a phone to go buy companion glasses to go along with it,” Cristiano Amon said. “I think we need to get to the point that the glasses are going to be no different than wearing regular glasses or sunglasses. And then with that, we can get scale.”

Qualcomm makes its first comments about Google and Samsung collaboration

At first, industry observers thought this collaboration’s goal would be cutting into Apple’s Vision Pro’s market presence with a cheaper headset, but the group’s big reveal is simply smart glasses paired with a device.

“AI is going to run on the device. It’s going to run on the cloud,” said Amon. “It’s going to run some in the glass, some in the phone, but at the end of the day, there’s going to be whole new experiences.”

Qualcomm has been open about its approach to powering laptops, PCs, and mobile devices with Snapdragon X Series chips that power the AI Copilot+. The San Diego-based company has become one of the big hitters in domestic chip creation, adding to its position as one of the biggest buyers of imported hardware.

Qualcomm’s newest product, the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core, announced Wednesday in Berlin, aims to rival offerings from Intel and AMD, both of whom benefitted from Congress passing the CHIPS and Science Act in 2022.
