Weekly Poll: Is a 3D Phone in Your Future?

Apple may be considering adding a 3D photo capabilities to a future iPhone, according to this recently uncovered patent application. Of course, Apple patents many things, so you can’t take this as confirmation of a forthcoming iPhone feature. That said, there are some 3D-enabled smartphones arriving on the market ahead of any potential dual-camera equipped iPhone. Most notably, the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint and the LG Optimus 3D, now known as the AT&T Thrill 4G.

But for all the sizzle that a 3D smartphone can deliver, is this something consumers actually want? Do you want one?

These early 3D phones are impressive, considering how few years have passed between the flip-to-open clamshell devices and the dual-core, 1+ GHz, high-res, app-running modern marvels we have today. But experience-wise, 3D still has a way to go before it’s an ideal interaction on a small screen.

Viewing angles are narrow – you have to hold the phone just right in order to enjoy the 3D effects – so forget crowding around the smartphone to share a 3D video with friends. It’s a one-person show for now. There’s also a general lack of commercial content in 3D, although that may change in time. And then there are the headaches.

But while 3D may be gimmicky, it can be fun, too – especially for gamers. Plus, lets not forget the bragging rights it entitles you to: “Oh your phone runs apps? Well mine runs 3D apps!” That has to count for something, right?

So what do you think, 3D or no 3D? Would you buy a 3D smartphone to get access to this new futuristic feature? Let us know in this week’s ReadWriteMobile poll.
