Nokia Choose MicroSoft Platform for Smartphones – MeeGo is not dead

nokia-windows-Microsoft-MeeGoExperts-smallGLOBAL – “Today Nokia announced plans for a broad strategic partnership with Microsoft to builds a new global mobile ecosystem” with “Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform”.
Damn. I know this was news that most of the MeeGo community did not want to hear, most would have preferred an alliance with Google (Android) or Even HP (WebOS) or Even the local drunk, but not the opitimy of the closed OS model, Not the evil one MicroSoft.
With this new partnership we will see:
• Nokia adopting Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy.
• Bing powering Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services. Microsoft adCenter will provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.
• Nokia Maps will be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services.
• Microsoft development tools will be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones
• Nokia’s content and application store will be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

From the press release:

Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year.

Interesting choice of wording, “MeeGo becomes an open-source …” I would like to remind whoever wrote this that MeeGo is open source, and that is without the approval of Nokia.
Nokia are NOT abandoning MeeGo and they see it Extending the scope of Qt with their first MeeGo device which is planned to ship later this year and will be compatible with applications developed within the Qt framework.
So here we are. Many feeling let down, but we see that even with Nokia taking a step back from MeeGo, it can not stop the momentum that MeeGo has attained. For all that see MeeGo as being dead, Please remember

“We are more than the sum of our parts, We, We are MeeGo”
