Meta’s CTO tells unhappy employees ‘to quit’ amid policy and layoff concerns – report

TLDR

  • Meta's CTO told employees unhappy with company policies to "consider working elsewhere."
  • His comments followed leaks of internal discussions and backlash over policy changes.
  • Meta replaced fact-checkers with Community Notes, citing concerns over political bias.

Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, apparently isn’t mincing words when it comes to employees’ expectations about company’s policy. According to Business Insider, Bosworth told some employees that if they think everyone at Meta has to agree with the company’s policies, they might want to “consider working elsewhere.”

His comments came in response to discussions on a post he shared on January 30 in “Let’s Fix Meta,” an open group on Meta’s internal Workplace forum. In the post, Bosworth had reportedly shared an article from The Verge covering CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks during an all-hands meeting that same day.

An unnamed employee reportedly called out the tech giant for scaling back its DEI programs and allegedly shutting down internal dissent, along with a few other concerns.

Along with the article link, Bosworth wrote that the entire Q&A from that day had been leaked, suggesting that someone had handed over the full audio feed to a journalist. He acknowledged the frustration and disappointment he saw in the reactions to the format change, saying he also felt a sense of loss but believed the leak “makes it clear it was the right call.”

Bosworth is said to have written in response to the staffer: “[If] your view is ‘everyone has to like all the policies we have and if they don’t it is appropriate to leak’ then I think you should consider working elsewhere.”

Another employee is said to have pushed back, saying that blaming leaks wasn’t the real issue and that Meta employees were feeling disrespected, especially with layoffs starting that week for so-called “low performers.”

The CTO reportedly added: “You should quit if you feel that way, I mean it.”

Meta employees’ ‘concerns’ over content moderation policy changes

In other comments reported by the news outlet, several Meta employees voiced concerns about recent changes to the company’s content moderation policies.

Earlier this year, the company cut its fact-checking teams and replaced them with Community Notes, similar to those on X. Zuckerberg called the fact-checkers “politically biased” and suggested that a crowdsourced fact-checking initiative across Meta’s platforms could be a more neutral approach.
