League of Legends to bring back Hextech chests

League of Legends developers, Riot Games, announced that Hextech chests are returning to the MOBA game.

The game has seen several patch changes over the years, though its controversial removal of Hextech Chests in season 15 caused a public outcry. Riot Games is adamant about righting that wrong by returning them to players in the launch of Act 2 next week.

The developers revealed the re-addition of chests in a dev update video on YouTube, with spokespersons Meddler and Pabro citing that it would allow League of Legends to “feel rewarding.” With Hextech Chests, players can earn the chance to earn the latest skins and characters for free.

Pabro said: “It’s clear that for many of you, Hextech Chests weren’t just a way to get stuff. They were an important part of making your time in League feel rewarding.

“We didn’t fully grasp how much this mattered to you, and that led us to make changes that missed the mark. As a result, Chests are coming back.”

It’s not the first time the community has pushed back against changes imposed by Riot Games, such as the now infamous $500 skin bundle commemorating esports player Faker.

Players will be able to earn these chests through the in-game battle pass and can earn more in the future through the League of Legends honor system.

Starting from Act 2 in the upcoming patch, up to 10 chests and keys will be earnable per act. Riot is offering eight chests in the free pass instead of the seasonal skin and the 1350 or lower skin, stating that players voiced they “prefer chests.” Two chests can be attained through the honor system, which rewards players for upholding positive behavior during matches.

Meddler said: “Now we’re bringing chests back through the pass instead of through champion mastery because we want to ensure that they’re accessible regardless of different playstyles.

“Whether you play modes with random champion selection or free choice, whether you play a wide variety of champions or just a few, we want to support that.”

Contents in Hextech Chests will also remain mostly the same as before including shards, emotes, and icons. With chests back in player hands, pursuing the latest skins in League of Legends should be more manageable.
