Interview with Samsung Gear watchface designer / programmer Denis Miroshnikov

Recently we caught up with Gear watch face designer Mike Wickens, to learn more about his story about developing watch faces for Gear devices. Today, we are discussing the same topic withDenis Miroshnikoff, owner of LuxuryWatches, to find out what makes him tick (pun intended!).
LuxuryWatches currently has over 78 watches for Gear S, S2, S3 and Fit2 in the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store and there main goal is to create watch faces that look like a REAL WATCH!

Denis, what is your Background?
I’ve been working in IT for over 20 years, as a programmer, system analyst and CEO. Also, I have design and art skills for realising part of my projects in 3D and 2D CAD programs. I also have skills with a range of Adobe products that have been gained over years of experience through everyday use and has now helped me with creating watch faces for the Samsung Gear product range.

How long have you been programming watch faces for the Samsung Galaxy APPs store?
I started working with Samsung in 2015 after moving to Rome, Italy. First, I learned the documentation and registered on the developer forums for both Samsung and Tizen. After studying the relevant documentation, and a discussion forum, I created the first program-watches, create a seller account on the Samsung Galaxy Apps store and uploading them for free downloads in GalaxyApps Store. That was the beginning…

Any other OS other than Tizen you have developed for?
For now, I have created a few applications for Samsung Tizen TV, but now still have not published them as I have not had enough time to devote to it, but this is something that I will revisit later on.

How many watch faces have you created and how often do you create them?
For now, the figure is around 70 watchface mark for all gear series in total. You are able to see yours in the Seller Office website after you have registered. Application creation time depends on its complexity and some applications are still in the project phase at the moment. It is always a pleasure to read a good comment or helpful hint, that has been posted on the Galaxy Apps Store, from a user that might improve the application in the next update.

How hard do you find creating Watchfaces for Gear Smartwatches?
Basically, I use Tizen Studio (TS) in developing their watchfaces. And the development process starts with an idea, for the 2D drawing or a 3D scene, and then it’s down to the actual work of coding the watchface. Programming the watchface is more difficult than creating it in Gear Watch Designer (GWD), but it provides unique dials that are better received and appreciated by end users. I think that it would be useful to have separate categories in the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store between the watchfaces that were created with Gear Watch Designer and TizenStudio, it will balance the work time of programmers and designers for doing his APPs.

Where can we find you on the net?
I’m open for the Brand-promotional B2B project for creating APPs with personal design, it’s a good deal for increase market penetration and brand awareness among consumers using innovative promotions.
You can contact us on the FaceBook support page of LuxuryWatches. The official website is under construction but you can find it at http://luxurywatchesapps.com/. Finally, you can email me at [email protected]

What are you looking forward to in 2017?
2017 for me is looking like an innovative year for the increase of sales for lightweight mobile smart devices like Smart watches (communicators in the past), IoT for connecting all thing together and being able to control them via a web interface.
Also, I hope to see additional hardware support for 3D User Interfaces (UI) because I think that’s the way forward and the timing is right. Soon all web browsers, including mobile browsers, can support WebGL and the new WebGL 2.0 extension with hardware acceleration. It’s possible to see working 3D( real-time 3D rendered scenes, like PC games) in all devices, including all Samsung Gear series, like in fantastic movies about aliens communication devices and dashboards. I will try to move in this direction with my apps for the web and wearable devices.
