Elon Musk’s AI company xAI launched Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini in beta mode on Tuesday (August 13) with both models to be released on the X social media platform.
For the first time, the new Grok model will allow users to generate images and share them through their tweets.
“Grok-2 is our frontier language model with state-of-the-art reasoning capabilities. This release includes two members of the Grok family: Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini,” read the xAI blog post introducing the duo.
It’s believed that the image generator has been made possible by the collaboration with Black Forest Labs, as the team states they are experimenting with the FLUX.1 model to expand the chatbot’s capabilities.
The elements that have been made possible through FLUX.1 hasn’t yet been confirmed though.
“Grok-2 is our state-of-the-art AI assistant with advanced capabilities in both text and vision understanding, integrating real-time information from the 𝕏 platform, accessible through the Grok tab in the 𝕏 app.
“Grok-2 mini is our small but capable model that offers a balance between speed and answer quality. Compared to its predecessor, Grok-2 is more intuitive, steerable, and versatile across a wide range of tasks, whether you’re seeking answers, collaborating on writing, or solving coding tasks.”

In the same way, a user would ask for information, they simply have to input a prompt about the image they are wishing to create. The tool will then spew back the AI-generated image it has come up with.
Unlike others though, there doesn’t appear to be restrictions on who can be AI-generated – at least not yet.

In contrast, ChatGPT 4o states that it “can’t create images of specific public figures in such a direct and recognizable manner.”
But it can “generate an image of a person resembling” the desired figure if it complies with the content policy.
