The expected Samsung Gear Sport has been on the news for a couple of weeks now. Information regarding the Gear Sport is scarce and what we know is that it will most likely be the first Tizen wearable to run on Tizen 3.0 platform as well as having a host of other features which include health-monitoring and water proof functionality. Samsung confirmed that it will be unveiling the brand new Gear S smartwatch next week in Berlin, possibly the Gear S4. This is coming after the release of the Galaxy Note 8. Rumors so far have suggested that this product will be a combination of the Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2.
The Gear Sport was recently sighted on the Gear App Store and this confirms the existence of this device but there is a lot more. On the Gear App Store, you have the option of selecting which resolution of Gear wearables the app will support, that is when submitting a new application. The images below show that there are options for 216 x 432 (Gear Fit2 and the still unannounced Gear Fit2 Pro), 360 x 480 (Gear S), 320 x 320 (Gear, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo), and 360 x 360 (Gear S2, S3) and Gear Sport.
When you select the 360 x 360 resolution option, a new page will ask you to choose the device pairs that would work seamlessly with the app (e.g. which device the app will work properly on). Here you can see that the Gear Sport is listed alongside the Gear S2, S3, Gear 1, 2, 2, 2 Neo, Gear Fit 2 and the upcoming Gear Fit 2 Pro.
Although, this doesn’t reveal much about the smartwatch, definitely gives us more than a name and does confirm that we are expecting a Gear Sport with a 360px screen similar to that of the S2 and S3. Before this new detail, the only information available was that while the device was under WiFi Alliance and FCC certification, the smartwatch will be carrying the version number SM-R600 and be called as the Gear Sport.
This is not the only leak that we have received in recent times as a twitter user Tizen Cafe of Samsung’s accessories and the Samsung Gear Sport was listed alongside Gear VR, IconX wireless earbuds, and still unofficially announced Gear Fit2 Pro. From these images, we can see that this device appears compact, slim and will offer 5 ATM waterproofing which will likely allow for swim tracking.
In addition to the display information, Samsung has also updated its S Health app and it will support the Gear Sport (SM-R600). Although the Gear Sport was not mentioned in the update, the update appears to be focused on various swim-tracking devices and from the information available, the Gear Sport will be one of them sooner rather than later.
