Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has unveiled a new AI tool which allows developers to create AI-powered crypto agents in less than three minutes.
Lincoln Murr, who is the developer working on the project, took to X to share the news by writing: “Introducing Based Agent: create AI agents with full onchain functionality on @base in less than 3 minutes.
“The era of Autonomous Onchain Agents is here.”
The new project has been built by Coinbase Developer platform’s software development kit along with OpenAI and Replit.
While AI is still relatively new in the grand scheme of the ever-changing world of technology, its rise has given way to autonomous agents which are starting to be worked on by developers worldwide. These ‘agents’ include the concept of AI systems, with the creations able to carry out a series of complex tasks without being directed.
In a recent Coinbase blog post, the company writes: “We believe that AI agents can become significant drivers of economic activity/growth and the predominant “users” of applications (both on/offchain), gradually shifting away from human users in the medium-to-long term.”

In the announcement, Lincoln shared the goal behind the autonomous agent framework: “Our goal here is to make it as easy as possible for you to get started building your own AI agents.”

There are several different modes for users to go through, alongside the fully autonomous version. This is where the agent can “just go off and do whatever it wants with different onchain interactions.”
The tool has been launched as a template, so developers can jump in and create their own projects while having access to the different smart contract functionalities. An X (formerly Twitter) API has been added too, so X bots can be created.
