Anthropic finalizing $3.5 billion funding round, according to report

Anthropic, who released its Claude chatbot in 2023, is reportedly finalizing a $3.5 billion funding round after initially setting out to raise $2 billion.

After aiming to raise a sum of money, they were said to be able to increase the amount during talks with investors, according to the Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the matter.

The report says the startup has been valued at $61.5 billion including the cash it is raising. This figure is a significant increase from its previous valuation, as it was reported to be valued at around $18 billion.

The publisher states the investors involved in the latest round include venture firms Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Bessemer Venture Partners, as they cite “knowledgeable people.”

An Abu Dhabi-based investment firm, called MGX, is also said to be in talks to participate.

Anthropic reported to have been valued at $61.5 billion

This comes after much discussion and discourse has taken place online about the future of the AI industry and if it can maintain the same momentum.

This was rocked even further when the Chinese-based company DeepSeek released a model that quickly became a competitor for the US brands but is free to use and was made for less.

If the report is true, however, it would suggest that some investors are still interested in US companies that develop AI models.

It’s this Wednesday (February 26) when industry favorite NVIDIA is set to release its earnings report which is important as they’re a key player in the AI boom. These will be released once the markets close in the United States.

This will be the company’s first report since DeepSeek shared the news about its more cost-effective large language model. In January, NVIDIA’s stock took a 17% dive in one day when DeepSeek claimed it could train models with significantly fewer GPUs.

The company rebounded, but many analysts are keeping an eye on its reports with some suggesting it could be released at around 1:20PM in the Pacific time zone.
