The Tizen-powered Gear S3 Frontier/Classic and the Gear S2 (Sport)/Classic are compatible with a good deal of Android smartphones, but the biggest concern for some interested Gear smartwatch buyers is whether or not Android apps will be available on their Tizen-powered smartwatch.
Google Maps navigation is strong in the directions and instructions it provides (as well as the streets it “knows”) and some Gear S3 and Gear S2 users want Google Maps on their Tizen-powered smartwatch. If Google Maps works, why change it?
A new app developed on the Tizen platform brings Google Maps navigation and instructions to your wrist without you needing to port an app over. The app is called Gear S2/S3 Navigation. The Gear S2/S3 Navigation app costs $1.99 in the Google Play Store, so you’re looking at a paid app here (which is to be expected).
To get the Gear S2/S3 Navigation app installed on your Gear S3 or Gear S2, you must first ensure you’ve downloaded the Gear Manager onto your Android smartphone, then install the Gear S2/S3 Navigation app on your Android smartphone. After that, you’ll need to install the app on your Gear S3 or S2 smartwatch (on the wrist, go to “apps” and then “more apps”). You must also approve of push notifications.
After that, you’re all set!
Let us know if you’ve downloaded either the Gear S2/S3 Navigation app and whether or not you find it comparable to Google Maps on an Android Wear smartwatch.
