Xiaomi Mi Band 4 certified by Bluetooth SIG, expect new features

The Xiaomi Mi Band 4, successor to Xiaomi’s popular Mi Band 3 fitness tracker, is nearing its launch. The fitness band has just been certified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). Xiaomi is expected to launch the device in the coming months.

“For Mi Band 4, it’s going to be in this year. It will be in 2019. But I’m not sure, it’s going to be in March and April. But, it is going to be in this year,” said David Cui, Chief Financial Officer at Huami, a Xiaomi sub-brand.

What to expect from Xiaomi Mi Band 4

The Mi Band 3 successor should come offering a mix of competitive features at a lucrative price. Details are scarce at the moment, but Xiaomi has been introducing something new with every generation of its enduringly popular fitness tracker. The trend will continue with the Mi Band 4.

“Each generation we learn something, we always do better. So we expect Mi Band 4 will be a similar – will have similar trend,” said Cui.

The Bluetooth certification revealed that the Mi Band 4 will come with Bluetooth v5.0 Low Energy, which is an upgrade over the v4.2 Low Energy found on the Mi Band 3. This should make for better connectivity on the upcoming fitness band. The SIG listing also confirmed that the band will be available in NFC variants as well, though it may be limited to certain markets. The current Mi Band 3 also comes in NFC-enabled variants.

We also expect the Band 4 to feature a slightly bigger display than the Band 3, which sports a 0.78-inch OLED touchscreen display. The fitness band is reported to have Electrocardiogram (ECG) capabilities like the one found in Apple Watch Series 4. However, owing to its affordability, the feature may have limited functionality.

The Mi Band 3 was launched at a starting price of just above $30. We expect Huami to price the Mi Band 4 in a similar segment.
