What’s that on your TV? It’s only finally Warhammer 40k as Amazon finally signs the deal to bring it to screens small and large

In an almost inevitable conclusion that has seemingly taken an inordinate amount of time, Games Workshop and Amazon Studios have both spat on the palms and shook hands to seal a deal to bring the Warhammer 40k franchise to TV and movie screens over the next couple of years.

Now while this certainly does not mean we will be enjoying any 40k content on Amazon Prime video in the next few months, it is coming, and already, you just know it is going to be massive.

In a community post on Warhammer-community.com, we were told, “It’s official – Games Workshop and Amazon Studios have finalized their deal – the creative guidelines are nailed down, and we’re all set to bring Warhammer to the screen. For those of you so inclined, you can read the super jazzy legal announcement here.”

Now the legal announcement is certainly a bit on the drier side – lawyers gonna law, but that tells us, “Further to its announcement on 18 December 2023, Games Workshop is pleased to announce that it has now agreed creative guidelines and reached a final agreement with Amazon Content Services LLC, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., (“Amazon”) for the adaption of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe into films and television series, together with associated merchandising rights.

Under the terms of the agreement, Games Workshop has granted exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of any initial Warhammer 40,000 production.

Production processes in respect of films and television series may take a number of years.”

So it’s taken a year to get this statement and now you are telling us, ‘Slow down, it’s going to be a while yet.’

Fortunately, the community post offers hope that movement is in fact underway, although it does state that the first project will take some years before we can cast our beady eyes upon it, “It’ll be some years. Project One* is about to go into development proper. So, next up is the script/s that will form the basis of everything else to come.”

With such a much-loved franchise as 40K which has already made such an impact in the tabletop and videogaming arenas with games such as Space Marine 2 and Darktide, it is safe to assume that plans will be spectacular and should definitely be worth the wait. One to follow over the next couple of years for sure.
