Understanding Samsung’s Internet-of-Things Story

As the Internet of things (IoT) becomes increasingly popular Samsung is increasing its role in the evolution of the concept. The tech giant has a lot to gain in an expanded IoT market as a result of its wide range of electronic gadgets. IoT is a concept that not only has the potential to impact how we live but also how we work. Samsung obviously sees a huge opportunity in the Internet of Things and is set to play a key role in revolutionising the connectivity trend.
The slide presentation that follows this post gives an insight into Samsung’s list of IoT products, both those still in development and those already found in homes. Samsung has ensured that all its smart home gadgets can be centrally controlled via its SmartThings hub.   Samsung SmartThings is actually a device designed to provide a single hub and app that you control everything through. The SmartThings hub is compatible with third-party IoT devices.
Samsung is working to position its smartphones as IoT control hubs. The recently released Galaxy S8 comes with a feature which makes it suited for use as an interface for Smart gadgets that connects to the SmartThings hub. The Galaxy S8 also has the company’s Bixby assistant which opens up the possibility of controlling the Smart home gadgets using voice prompt.
The Tizen-powered Smart TVs, as well as Samsung tablets, are also IoT-ready and can connect to the SmartThings platform. The tech giant’s range of IoT also includes its Smartwatches and fitness trackers comprised of the Gear S3, S2, FitBit and FitBit 2, all powered by Samsung’s in-house Tizen OS. The company has revealed that its latest Tizen 4.0 will play a big role in its IoT gadgets.
Also included in Samsung range of IoT-connected devices is its latest refrigerators, stove, washing machine, and IoT-connected Robot vacuum cleaners that can be controlled using smartphones and smartwatches. As a matter of fact, the company is working to ensure that all the products it manufactures are IoT-enabled by 2020. The market leader also makes a host of IoT networking hardware for various connectivity needs.
Apart from Smart home devices, Samsung is also venturing into Smart car technologies with its acquisition of automobile equipment company Harman International Industries for $8 billion. The acquisition is said to Samsung’s biggest deal ever. The Korean giant also disclosed last year that it would invest $1.2 billion in U.S-based IoT startups and its own projects. To also make things easy for start-ups and other IoT device developer, Samsung developed the ARTIK platform. Samsung newly introduced its next-generation ARTIK™053 modules that are designed to speed up the process companies go through between product development and launch. The company’s chip business could also see some patronage from the IoT growth. Check out the following slides listing the company’s IoT products below.
