Total War in your pocket as Empire heads to iOS and Android this fall

Creative Assembly’s venerable wargaming series Total War is set to make an appearance on iPhones and Androids everywhere this fall as Feral Interactive will release Total War: Empire for mobile devices.

Billed as the “The game that unleashed Total War on a global scale,” the game may well be better known to you in its PC format Empire: Total War. A subtle but important change to bring the branding in line with other games in the series.

Total War: Empire will arm you with the technology of 18th-century warfare and place the conquest of Europe, India, and the Americas at your doom-scrolling fingertips, introducing epic naval engagements, and a challenging, world-spanning campaign map that will reward shrewd diplomacy and decisive management.

Having undergone a complete control overhaul, Total War Empire will join Total War: Rome and Medieval II on the mobile platforms, and with Feral having had a hand in both previously, the studio’s experience will help smooth the way for this latest iteration.

All that has been shown off so far is a short 26-second cinematic video which you can see for yourself above but with Fall/Autumn fast approaching the game must be almost ready to ship to mobile stores.

The iOS & Android versions also feature a host of gameplay and art improvements from 2009’s PC original, bringing it more in line with modern expectations. The original back in the day received a Universal Acclaim award on Metacritic and a score of 90 across the board with praise such as, “Astonishing…Immense… A strategy masterwork.” from some reviewers. Meanwhile, the game still holds a Very Positive rating on Steam some 15 years after release as the game holds up as one of the best strategy wargames of the generation.

Playing a game of such grandiose scale on a small screen will present certain challenges of course but players will be able to see before long whether Feral Interactive has managed to pull it off or not.

No word on the price yet, but we will update this page as soon as we receive it.
