The Outer Worlds 2 looks ‘incredible’ according to Obsidian CEO

TLDR

  • Obsidian's CEO confirms The Outer Worlds 2 development is "going really well."
  • The sequel was announced in 2021, with minimal updates until this recent interview.
  • Obsidian plans to continue working on it after completing other projects like Avowed.

After a long silence since its announcement three years ago, Obsidian Entertainment’s CEO has said that development on The Outer Worlds 2 is “going really well.”

While that comment may not be as exciting as a new trailer or a gameplay reveal, it is surely a huge relief for fans of the game who have been left with nothing but silence since the 2021 announcement that a sequel was in development.

Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart broke that silence in a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube as part of a discussion about how Obsidian has managed with juggling multiple projects simultaneously.

“It’s going really well; I’m really impressed with the team.

“I appreciate Microsoft and the teams, we said ‘No, we will get there. We’ll get there with all of these games.’ Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No, but we’re going to get there. And I think that’s been proven [Grounded, Pentiment].

“Grounded turned out awesome. Pentiment turned out awesome. Avowed is going to be great. The Outer Worlds 2 is looking incredible. We have a base now with everything we are doing with Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, with how we use Unreal and the tools that we’ve been developing for years and years – to go off and make games, the whole next generation of games.”

The Outer Worlds 2 is coming, we just don’t know when yet

It’s not a lot of information about The Outer Worlds 2, but it is at least enough to reassure us that the game is still on its way. As of last October, The Outer Wilds had sold over five million copies, solidifying its position in the pantheon of epic space RPGs and underlining the appetite for a sequel.

Now that Avowed has been confirmed for February 2025, Obsidian’s resources will soon be freed up to work on The Outer Worlds 2, and while there’s no news of a release date yet, just knowing it’s still being worked on and “looking incredible” will be enough to tide us over.
