Sleep Fighter – Japanese eSports tournament will punish players for not getting enough rest in the run-up to the competition

We all know that sleep is important and equally, we all know that we probably play games longer than we should before bedtime. Bad routines are easy to get into, but if you are prepping for a big Street Fighter tournament you might be a little more inclined to try and get a bit of extra practice in, to the detriment of your personal health.

Well, not at Japan’s Sleep Fighter tournament at the end of this month you won’t as missing out on vital shuteye is going to cost players, big time.

Points will be deducted from players for not sleeping enough, which all sounds a bit crazy. Participants will be attached to a sleep monitoring device supplied by tournament sponsor SS Pharmaceuticals who are supporting the event as part of its Active Sleep Project.

For the week before the tournament players must get a minimum of six hours a night and for every one they miss, they will have five points deducted from the team score. If games are tied the teams with the highest amount of sleep get to choose the tiebreaker.

A couple of things here – six hours is not really a lot of sleep with most advice suggesting that eight hours is what you should be looking for. Also, there’s nothing really stopping them from attaching their monitor to say, my teenage daughter, who sleeps most of the day anyway (although I assume they have thought of that).

The Active Sleep Project aims to get the people of Japan to sleep more saying, “By actively sleeping, you can make the most of each day and live your life to the fullest. In order to bring this ‘active sleep’ to as many people as possible, we are starting the Active Sleep Project to do our best to support those who are taking on the challenge of sleeping.”

SS Pharmaceuticals produces a drug (obviously) called Driel which is a “sleep-promoting pill” that helps to alleviate “temporary insomnia symptoms.”

Meanwhile, the Street Fighter phase of the eSports World Cup is currently underway in Riyadh and you can read more about that too.
