Second Light and Wonder slot pulled amid controversy

Gaming giant Light and Wonder (L&W) has pulled its second slot, Jewel of the Dragon, amid an ongoing copyright battle.

The company has announced a voluntary removal of one hundred and fifty Jewel of the Dragon slot machines from casino environments. The move comes on the back of a lengthy exchange between Aristocrat Leisure and Light and Wonder surrounding the Dragon Train slot series.

Light and Wonder remove Jewel of the Dragon slots

As we reported, Light and Wonder were facing further scrutiny over similar games to Dragon Train and Aristocrat was showing no signs of slowing their lengthy legal debate.

The share price of Light and Wonder has consistently dropped in recent days, with a 17% to 20% decline looking all the more likely as the week comes to a close. This is the lowest Light and Wonder share drop in the year to date (YTD).

Now the company has acted first to remove the Jewel of the Dragon series to get ahead of the possible legal involvement of another franchise staple.

However, Light & Wonder CEO Matt Wilson said as part of an earnings call that the removal of these machines accounts for less than one percent of the overall deployed might of the company’s active slot base.

Wilson stated, “It’s (Jewel of the Dragon) a small game in relation to the universe of games we’ve created.” Dragon Trian has substantially more devices in play at 2,200 deployed nationally across casino floors.

The complaint from Aristocrat originally pinpointed Dragon Train as the cornerstone of the alleged copyright infringement, but the company amended its suit on March 14, 2025.

The company said, “L&W’s misappropriation of Aristocrat trade secrets extends well beyond the use of confidential Aristocrat math information to develop Dragon Train.”

The suit and the gaming giant’s attorneys allege that Aristocrat’s information has been used by Light and Wonder for games such as “Jewel of the Dragon, Double Dragon, and at least one unreleased game.”
