Samsung’s flagship line of TVs for 2016- The SUHD TVs are now being pushed with a new firmware update that further enhances their HDR (High Dyamic Range) capabilities. Samsung have branded the new feature in the firmware update as HDR+ and according to the company’s press release, “The firmware update is designed to enhance High Dynamic Range (HDR) quality to its highest picture quality capacity, even if the source isn’t in HDR format.” The Quantum Dot display panel on Samsung’s SUHD TVs might be rated to deliver a peak brightness of 1000 nits which is essential for a HDR compatible TV but all that is of no use unless there is any HDR ready content to play in the first place.
With only a handful of HDR ready content available right now, Samsung doesn’t seem to want you to be left disappointed after buying their expensive SUHD TVs and realizing the scarcity of HDR content to watch on them. The new HDR+ update will most likely perform some real-time video processing to output even Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content at near HDR level quality. HDR mode brings out the finite details in each frame by improving the contrast and making bright areas look more brighter to add more depth to the scene. The color accuracy also improves by a huge margin making the images “pop” out.
Samsung have also added an “Expert mode” in the update to help you customize the HDR+ settings to suit your liking by calibrating brightness, contrast and color gradation. This setting can be accessed from “Picture – Special viewing” option. The automatic update is out right now for all 2016 SUHD TVs while other HDR compatible UHD TVs from 2016 will be receiving the update in September.
