Whenever the Samsung Z2 launch in Kenya, the device might just make it as the cheapest Tizen OS powered smartphone ever. The exact date the Z2 will go official in Kenya has not yet been disclosed by Samsung but Samsung Electronics East Africa has teased the estimated price the device will fetch when finally launched.
Samsung Electronics East Africa held an event in Nairobi where the Tizen OS was introduced to the East Africa market as well as Samsung’s strategy as regards the Tizen OS in the East Africa market, particularly in Kenya. According to Sijmon Kariithi, Director of Internet and Mobile (IM) at the East Africa Regional branch of Samsung Electronics, the Korean company plans to release a Tizen-powered smartphone and other household appliances in Kenya which would run on its Tizen operating system.
The Samsung official also hinted at the Samsung Z2 with 4G LTE release in Kenya and disclosed the device would carry a price tag hovering around Ksh. 6,000 (about $60) in Kenya. Surprisingly, the Samsung Z1 with lower specs and without 4G connectivity is presently sold around that amount in India, while the Z2 recently launched in India sells a little higher than what Samsung is planning to sell the device in Kenya and East Africa.
In addition, Samsung is making sure the Tizen powered Z2 gets local apps on the Tizen Store. The Korean market leaders have organized a series of workshop and hackathon in collaboration with the academy of software development of the Kenya-based Zalego Institute of Technology and Innovation to capture the interest of software developers and local applications creators so that they’ll create new Tizen supported mobile applications which would enrich the selection of apps in Tizen Store.
The press briefing announcing the impending launch, coupled with the workshop and developers’ competition indicates that the Samsung Z2 might just be dropping soon in Kenya as its next destination.
